About Nebraska Community Blood Bank

Nebraska Community Blood Bank, a Division of Innovative Blood Resources, has been saving lives in our communities since 1968 as an independent nonprofit. Driven by our mission, we are dedicated to connecting people who need life-saving blood with generous volunteers who give. Nebraska Community Blood Bank supplies blood and blood components to over 20 healthcare facilities in 13 counties throughout eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.

Programs & Services Offered

  • Through effective outreach to donors; continual development of biomedical expertise; and brand-building partnerships with the community, blood drive sponsors and healthcare facilities, Nebraska Community Blood Bank connects those who need blood with those generous volunteers who give.

  • Blood typing and education programs are put on throughout the community.

  • PACE-approved courses through NCBB’s learning management system are offered to hospital clinical laboratory staff.

  • Each fall, we conduct a workshop for high school students who coordinate blood drives at their schools. Participating high schools are eligible for secondary education scholarships.

  • Informal speaker's bureau is comprised of blood donors, patients and other community members who share their experiences about the importance of blood donation.

  • NCBB is one of the nation’s blood banks selected to participate in the federal Operation Warp Speed initiative, offering testing for Covid-19 antibodies, in order to identify potential donors of a life-saving specialty blood product called convalescent plasma.

  • One in three people will need a blood transfusion in their lifetime.

  • Only 38% of people are eligible to donate blood, though everyone may someday need it.

  • Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood.

  • Blood transfusion is the most common hospitalization procedure in the United States.

  • NCBB is the sole supplier of blood to Bryan Health, Nebraska Medicine and Methodist Health Systems.

You Can Help

  • $50 pays for additional testing to precisely match a blood donor for a patient with sickle cell disease.

  • $100 fills the gas tank of a bloodmobile. NCBB bloodmobiles travel to more than 500 blood drives every year.

  • $175 pays for additional testing to precisely match a blood donor for a cancer patient.

Dollars at Work

  • $16,750 in scholarships were awarded in the 2020-2021 school year.

  • 17,433 volunteer donors donated blood or platelets in 2020.

  • Over 20 healthcare facilities have participated in PACE-approved courses.

  • Over 300 people participated in educational seminars and workshops in 2020.
