Cheri’s Story
Cheri Beda has called Hastings, Nebraska home since 2011, but she’s a proud native of Upstate New York. For the past 12 years, she’s worked at Central Community College, currently serving as the Alumni and Development Director for the CCC Foundation. Cheri is deeply rooted in her community and passionate about making a difference through education and advocacy.
She and her husband Phil have three children: Chyna, a nurse living in Omaha (and soon to be married); Piper, who will be a Junior at Hastings High; and Porter, who is 11 (almost 12) and attends Hastings Middle School. Cheri is also mom to two adorable schnauzers, Chewbacca and Shine.
In April 2023, life changed for Cheri’s family when Porter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after a call from him saying he was too weak to walk home. A trip to the doctor led to an emergency hospital stay at Children’s Hospital, where the journey with T1D began. The diagnosis was overwhelming, but the support from Breakthrough T1D was immediate and impactful. After submitting their information on the website, Cheri received a personal call and has felt connected ever since.
She and Porter have participated in the Breakthrough T1D Walk, volunteered at the Gala, and this year, Porter will attend Children's Congress in Washington, D.C., advocating for continued research and the hope for a cure. Breakthrough T1D has been a light during their darkest days—offering resources, community, and hope. Cheri is committed to spreading awareness, supporting early screening, and showing that even if you can’t give a lot financially, time and passion make a real difference.
When she’s not working or advocating for T1D, Cheri enjoys fitness adventures, traveling, and feeding the wildlife in her backyard.
