Emma’s Story

Emma is a 24-year-old autistic woman from Omaha who, after completing her high school transition program in 2022, began exploring next steps alongside her family. While they were interested in opportunities to build independent living skills, Emma’s mom shared that they had assumed this stage was still a few years away. Following a busy and exciting summer - including Emma earning a national title in the Miss Amazing pageant - the family learned about Prosper Academy, a new pilot program set to launch the following month.

Emma was already familiar with Autism Action Partnership through her participation in Making Memories events and Summer Art Camp. When her family realized Prosper Academy could be a meaningful next step on Emma’s path toward independence, they eagerly connected with AAP staff to learn more.

In August 2022, Emma and her classmates began the two-year Prosper Academy pilot program, moving into a dorm-style living environment designed to support hands-on learning. There, Emma developed essential life skills such as budgeting, prioritizing health and safety, using public transportation, planning and scheduling, and more. Students also participated in regular community outings—including festivals, baseball games, farmers markets, grocery shopping, movies, and dining out—to practice and apply what they were learning in real-world settings.  Emma is now living on her own and thriving.

As part of the program, Prosper Academy students were also enrolled in Prosper Workforce Services to support their employment goals. With limited prior work experience, Emma began as an administrative assistant through PWS’s work experience program. She later secured a childcare position, continuing to build her skills and confidence in the workplace. After holding several additional roles, Emma is now working in what she proudly describes as her “dream job,” supporting students like herself through Project SEARCH.

Outside of class, Emma enjoys watching Disney movies, performing in the community, and spending time with friends. She dreams of one day starting her own nonprofit to support young people with disabilities. We can’t wait to see all that Emma will accomplish as she continues to grow, lead, and inspire.
